History and Statutes

The Belgian Psychological Society was founded in 1946 on the initiative of Albert Michotte. Read more about the history.

The society's purpose was and is still to bring together all persons living in Belgium who are interested in the scientific development of Psychology and its applications.

The latest statutes/ constitution was ratified by the general assembly meeting, on May 5th, 2005.

The Association is governed by an executive committee. Its membership currently reaches around 250 members, most of whom hold academic positions in universities.

Mission statement: Supporting and promoting psychological science in Belgium

The Belgian Association for Psychological Sciences (BAPS) seeks to unite all those interested in the development of psychological sciences and in its applications in Belgium. Its goals are:

  • Facilitating contacts between researchers in Belgium

  • Providing incentives for researchers in Belgium at different stages in their career,

  • Providing an outlet for psychological research in Belgium

  • Representing the values and goals of Belgian psychological scientists at the Belgian, European, and World level

  • Membership at minimal cost with many benefits

1. Facilitating contacts between researchers in Belgium

 

The annual BAPS meeting is open to all areas of research in psychology. It provides a platform where psychological scientists from Belgium and neighbouring countries can meet, interact, and get acquainted with the latest developments in psychological science. It is a unique opportunity:

  • To kick-start and maintain collaborations at the local Belgian level (joint PhDs, grant proposals, joint special issues or books, …)

  • To learn about the best research in Belgium

  • To attend talks by leading international keynote speakers

  • To spot talent (future PhD students, future postdocs)

  • For young researchers to present their work in a supportive environment

  • For all professions in psychology to learn about the current state of scientific knowledge related to their practice

BAPS Mailing list and social media:

  • Provides an accessible means for the exchange of information regarding job opportunities, trainings, departmental talks, scientific meetings, …

 

2. Providing incentives for researchers in Belgium at different stages in their career

  • Best Bachelor, Best Master and Best PhD Thesis Awards         

  • Coming soon: mid-career and whole career awards

  • Sponsoring conferences/workshops organized by Belgian researchers

 

3. Providing an outlet for psychological research in Belgium

  • "Psychologica Belgica" is an ISI-listed, open-access journal committed to Open Science policies

  • It encourages the publication of special issues coordinated by Belgian and non-Belgian scientists. These special issues often attract lots of attention, both at the science and media level

  • It offers a new possibility to publish original review papers based on PhD theses

  • BAPS members can publish free of any charge

 

 

4. Representing the values and goals of Belgian psychological scientists at the Belgian, European, and World level

 

  • BAPS is a member of the Belgian Federation of psychologists (FBP-BFP), the European Federation of Psychologists Association (EFPA; board for scientific affairs) and the International Union of Psychological Science (IUPsyS)

  • It is the only national association of researchers in psychology in Belgium and represents all areas of psychological research (basic and applied)

 

5. Membership at minimal cost with many benefits

  • Free for master students

  • Low fee for PhD students (62€)

  • It includes:

    • Free participation in the Annual Meeting

    • Fee waiver to publish in open access journal Psychologica Belgica

    • Eligibility for the Best Bachelor, Best Master and Best PhD Thesis Award (need to be member for at least 2 years)

    • Free membership to APS for one year

    • Membership of the Belgian Federation of Psychologists
